Onion (Allium cepa) is one of the second most important commercial crop of the India. In India, onion crop is grown in about 1.20 million ha area with an annual production of 19.40 million tones with productivity 16.2 tons/ha.
Climate change has a big influence on future of onions. NHRDF is working hard to developed the onion of the future by creating 14 new lines of onion with better yields, disease resistance, storage and processing qualities. The varieties are developed for different Agro climatic zones, season with consideration always given to changing market demands and consumer preferences. Among these, only 5 lines were notified by sub varieties release committee.
Onion varieties :
Agrifound dark red: medium pungent variety. suitable to grow in kharif season all over the country.
Agrifound light red: good keeping quality. Suitable to grow in rabi season all over the country.
NHRDF-Red (L-28): medium keeping quality. suitable for cultivation in northern, central, and western India in rabi season.
NHRDF-Red (L-355): good keeping quality. suitable for cultivation in Delhi, U.P, Haryana, Maharastra, Karnataka, A.P in rabi season.
NHRDF-Red -4: good keeping quality. suitable for cultivation in U.P, Bihar, west Bengal, and Imphal in rabi season
